Our words were always whispered
so softly, that even the night could not hear
but there were secrets that you kept
and every secret cast a shadow
long dark silhouettes between us
the truths you buried in the dark
slowly pulled us apart
I eventually realised that I had lost myself
that you had stolen myself from me
my individual identity, the things
that make me, me, my precious ipseity
the truth stood between us, unapologetic
in an almost unbearable silence
now sometimes, in the fragile hours
between sleeping and waking, I still think of you
and for a brief impossible moment there are no lies
only the secrets we once kept
before secrecy became the thing
that destroyed us
