Beyond the Edge

…of darkness

My soul is no longer mine
it remains with you but still calls to me
from some uncertain place beyond the edge of darkness
and I can hear you calling
together with the voices of everything and everyone that I ever lost
their songs carry me away into a new dream, a new dawn, a new dimension
my heart beats faster, disconnected from the present
I feel both fear and freedom as I search for you
an exercise in futility
aching to be whole I fear my earthly shell is too fragile, too broken
for this journey
my eyes finally open to a vast empty room
you are nowhere to be seen but your voice lingers, whispering in my ear
reminding me that my soul can journey from this earthly realm
in the brief moments that the universe allows
but my body, a mere vessel, is rooted in this world
my only consolation, that if I hear you calling
we can meet again in that uncertain place beyond the edge of darkness
and joy is sweeping me away
after a dream that has gone tumbling across the midnight sky
