…between asleep and awake

A faraway place between asleep and awake
a secret meeting, between midnight and dawn
beneath a moonless sky of shadowed velvet
the wheeling shadows slowly mark the hours and the earth turns
colours of water and memories of moonlight
my heart trembles like a tree in the wind
dappled shadows caress fallen leaves
carpets of blossoms, clustered and fragrant in the growing dark
cascades of thunder
bright prints of raindrops dancing on flagstones
pain that comes and goes
a ruined wall, an intricate lace of vines
a single cherry blossom falls
floating idly free, delicate in its demise
feather-light and fragile
floor boards creaking, shimmering colours of silk
the reflection of someone
a burning ember falls
the candle fades and I must leave
