Waiting for Depth

…in the shallow pools

Painting by John William Waterhouse 1903

My heart grew weary
waiting for depth
in the shallow pools

no above no below
just endless drifting
ebbing out into emptiness

searching for meaning
in the vast fields of nowhere
that always surrounded me

moments of joy were ephemeral
as the first fragile snowflakes
or dreams that lingered just out of reach

my destiny fading
in the deep empty wells
love and loss binding us both

like Narcissus
I saw my own reflection
and found myself drowning
in sorrow’s dark seas
